Today's reading 1Samuel 19
King James Version with Web Encyclopedia Links: 1Samuel 19

1Samuel 19
1 Samuel 19 (v. 1-7) Jonathan, Saul's son try to intercede on behalf of David when Saul told him and his servants that he wanted to kill David. Saul finally relented and said that he would not kill David. In v. 8-10, Saul became jealous of David again because an evil spirit from the Lord came upon him. He threw a spear at David while he was playing the harp. At Naioth, Saul sent men to watch David's house and to kill him in the morning. David knew about it and his wife, Michal, helped him to escape. During this time David wrote Psalm 59, a prayer of strength and deliverance from his enemies. In v. 19-24 The men reported to Saul that David was at Naioth. Saul sent men to kill David. On the way to David's house they met a group of prophets prophesying with Samuel as their leader. They ended up prophesying with the prophets. Saul eventually came and end up prophesying as well.

Application: Be careful of jealousy or envy! This was what got Saul in trouble. This would lead to attempted murder. We continue to see Saul's heart hardened more and more and he drifted away from God further and further.

Verses to meditate on:
23 So Saul went to Naioth at Ramah. But the Spirit of God came even upon him, and he walked along prophesying until he came to Naioth.
