1Samuel 18
Jonathan became a close friend of David (verse 1-4). David's influence increased and he became popular. Saul became jealous because the women sang "Saul has slain his thousands and David his tens of thousands. An evil spirit from the Lord came upon Saul. In a fit of rage, Saul hurled a spear at David. David was a good military leader (v.12-17) and Saul became afraid of him (v.17-27). Saul promised Merab, his older daughter to David but later gave her to Adriel. Saul then gave Michal to David to marry. Saul's attitude hardened against David (28-30).

Application: Be careful of jealousy or envy! This was what got Saul in trouble. This would lead to attempted murder. We continue to see Saul's heart hardened more and more and he drifted away from God further and further.

Verses to meditate on:
28 When Saul realized that the LORD was with David and that his daughter Michal loved David, 29 Saul became still more afraid of him, and he remained his enemy the rest of his days.
