Today's Reading Leviticus 19

Leviticus 19 deals with a variety of laws. The first thing God reminded Israel, as He reminds us 'Be holy, because I, the Lord your God am, Holy'. If we are holy as he is holy we would love the Lord and our neighbor as ourselves. He reminds them not to turn to idolatry. Why, because it was their downfall, we see for the next 800 years, there was constant idol worship, of Baal, Molech and other gods. God reminded the people of the Ten Commandments. We need to be constantly reminded because we are a people of short-sightedness and short term memory when it come to the things of God. The chapter spoke about how we should treat the handicapped persons those who were deaf and blind, our orphans and widows, and senior citizens. The idea of picking grapes and leaving some for the poor, reminds me of Ruth in the Bible who could glean along the edge so that she could get some food to eat. The practice of divination or sorcery was forbidden (27, 31). Many of the laws that God had instituted with the Israelites are again reflection of loving God and our neighbor as ourselves. This was written some 3500 years ago and please read the chapter carefully and see how practical this passage is today.

In 1Samuel 28, Saul wanted to inquire of the Lord concerning the Philistines who were assembled to fight him. The Lord did not answer him by dreams, or Urim or the prophets. Saul got very desperate and got his servants to get him in touch with the Witch of Endor. This was against the law of God (Leviticus 19.26, 31; 20.6-8; Deuteronomy18-9-14). He saw this vision of Samuel,. who told him that he would die in battle. As prophesied by Samuel, Saul died the next day by commiting suicide.

Application:
Never, ever, get involved with spirit medium, witchcraft or sorcery, they will be very detrimental to your emotional, physical and spritual well-being!! This was Saul's tragic life spinning out of control. He had such a good start in the race of life. Now he no longer looked to God for wisdom but to a witch.

Verses to meditate on:
16But Samuel replied, "Why ask me if the LORD has left you and has become your enemy? 17The LORD has done just as he said he would. He has taken the kingdom from you and given it to your rival, David. 18The LORD has done this because you did not obey his instructions concerning the Amalekites. 19What's more, the LORD will hand you and the army of Israel over to the Philistines tomorrow, and you and your sons will be here with me. The LORD will bring the entire army of Israel down in defeat." - New living Translation

In 1Samuel 26 The Ziphites betrayed David to Saul. Saul sent his men to capture David but David and his men hid from him. David knew where Saul had camped, so he went down with Abishai into Saul's camp. They found Saul asleep. David had another opportunity to kill Saul, yet he spared his life again. David said that Saul's life was in God's hands not his (v. 9-11). They took Saul's water jug and spear which was at Saul's head. Notice God had put everyone in Saul's camp into deep sleep.

David called to Abner, Saul's commander and ask for Saul. He showed him the water jug and the spear. Saul realized that David could have killed him but he spared his life. He told David that he sinned, trying to kill David. Saul went home. We do not know how sincere Saul was but we know that David trusted God to deal with Saul in His own time.

Application:
David had another chance to kill Saul, his mortal enemy. Yet he left vengeance up to God! We know the sincerity of David's heart, how he followed God. David wrote quite a few Psalms asking God to take care of his enemies. These are known as the Imprecatory Psalms

Verses to meditate on:
9 But David said to Abishai, "Don't destroy him! Who can lay a hand on the LORD's anointed and be guiltless? 10 As surely as the LORD lives," he said, "the LORD himself will strike him; either his time will come and he will die, or he will go into battle and perish. 11 But the LORD forbid that I should lay a hand on the LORD's anointed. Now get the spear and water jug that are near his head, and let's go."

In 1Samuel 25, David sent some young men to speak to Nabal, Abigail's husband. They were to say that they did not mistreat Nabal's men and sak Nabal to show them some kindness by offering David whatever, he could find for him. Nabal got upset and drove the young men away. He was not showing hospitality that was expected at that time. Nabal's servant went to Abigail who got provisions, food and water, and brought them to David, apologizing for her foolish husband, knowing that David could kill the whole family. Abigail intereceded for Nabal and spared his life. David praised the Lord for Abigail having such wisdom and tact in handling that particular situation. Abigail told Nabal what had happened and within ten days the Lord struck Nabal and he probably died from a stroke. David met his second wife Abigail under God’s intervention and Abigail’s intercession.

Application:
We must learn to be hospitable to people. Sometimes we are rash with strangers and have already prejudge them as been worthless. God took care of Nabal. David was also rash and wanted to kill Nabal. Abigail was a peacemaker and intereceded for her husband Nabal. ABigail was a good example to follow in this situation.

32 David said to Abigail, "Praise be to the LORD, the God of Israel, who has sent you today to meet me. 33 May you be blessed for your good judgment and for keeping me from bloodshed this day and from avenging myself with my own hands.

In 1Samuel 22, (v.1-2) Achish drove him away and David escaped to the cave of Adullam. His brothers and his father’s household supported him. This was when he wrote Psalm 102, when he prays for refuge from his enemies. some warriors joined David including Gadites who had defected to David (In 1Chronicles 12.8-18).. In v. 3-5, at Mizpah, David went to Moab, another enemy of Israel and asked them to let his mother and father stay with him. The king of Moab had allowed it. Sometimes God will even use your enemies to protect you and your loved ones. In v. 6-19 Doeg told Saul that he saw David at Nob. Saul ordered Doeg to kill the priests of Nob! Doeg went and massacred the priests. David heard of the slaughter from Abiathar, a son of Ahimelech. David felt responsible for the deaths of the priest and his family. Psalm 52 was written at this time, the psalm mocked Doeg and warned that God would avenge for the deeds what Doeg had done.

Application:
Wicked men may seem to win for the moment but they will face their destruction in the end. We do not need to afraid of wicked men who seem to prosper God will judge them. Saul met a tragic end to his like as well as Doeg. Be encoraged God is in control.

1Samuel 21 (1-6) David went to Nob, where he met Ahimelech, the priest. David lied and told him that he was on a mission from Saul. He asked him for five loaves of bread, or some food. Ahimelech gave him some consecrated bread from the altar. In 7-9, Doeg the Edomite was also there and he watched David took Goliath’s sword. Psalm 52 was written at that time.
In v. 10-12, he fled to the Philistines in Gath where went to King Achish, the king for protection. David was desperate, he stayed with the Philsitines, knowing that they would not trust him because he had killed Goliath and launched many military campaigns against them. This was when he wrote Psalm 56. In verse 13-15 He pretended to be insane before Achish and his servants. Achish. Psalm 34 is associated with this event. According to the NIV Study Bible, Abimelech was a traditional dynastic name for Achish.

Application:
David took the consecrated bread from Ahimelech the priest. Sometimes even some things that are stated in the Law, must be used for practical use. Jesus and his disciples were criticized for plucking grain and eatinmg it on the Sabbath. They were accused of working on the Sabbath by the Pharisees.

David went to stay with his enemies, and to protect himself, he pretended to be mad. What would you have done if you were in David's position. Apparently David was at a low point in his spiritual life and he trusted his wits instead of God.

Verses to meditate on:
4 But the priest answered David, "I don't have any ordinary bread on hand; however, there is some consecrated bread here—provided the men have kept themselves from women."

In 1Samuel 20 (v. 1-17) the friendship deepened between David and Jonathan. Jonathan promised to protect David and warn him of Saul's intention. David and Jonathan made a covenant (v. 16) to each other. In verse 18-23 a plan of warning David was devised to let David know Saul's intention towards David. In verses 24-34, Saul discloses his intention to kill David and even ended throwing a spear at Jonathan to kill his own son! In v. 35-45 Jonathan warned David and the reminded each other of the friendship they had for each other, and reaffirmed the covenant they had made with each other.

Application: Be careful of jealousy or envy! Saul noticed that the frienship between David and Jonathan deepened. What should we learn from this? Jonathan was a friend to David even though it would cost him the throne. He knew that David would be king one day instead of him. The evil spirit from the Lord does not mean that God have evil spirits rather it meant He ALLOWED evil spirits to control Saul but each time He protected David against Saul. David did not retaliate against Saul. He knew that he would become king one day. He waited on the Lord even though Saul tried to kill him with the spear three times and sent men to kill him at his house. David evaded Saul but did not kill Saul. He left the vengeance up to God to deal with Saul. Rom 12.17-21.
This was what got Saul in trouble. This would lead to attempted murder. We continue to see Saul's heart hardened more and more and he drifted away from God further and further.

23 So Saul went to Naioth at Ramah. But the Spirit of God came even upon him, and he walked along prophesying until he came to Naioth.

In Samuel 17 deals with the killing of Goilath by David. The spiritual lesson to be learnt here was that David went in the strength of the Lord. He had remembered what God did for him, delivering him form the paw of the lion, and the paw of the bear (v. 37). David reasoned with faith that God would deliver him from Goliath. Saul offered him his armor, but David was not used to wearing it. Instead, he used five smooth stones and a sling, and he approached Goliath in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel (v. 45). He struck Goliath on the forehead, he felled facedown, then he killed him with Goliath's sword.

Application: Spiritual lessons to be learnt? Having victory in the Christian Life is done BY GOD's WAY! God is the God of Surprises! David REMEMBERED what God had done for him and he applied that faith to the current situation. God used five small stones, a sling and a shpherd boy (foolish things) of the world to (confound the wise!) defeat Goliath! That day the Israelites had a major victory over the Philistines.

Verses to meditate on:
45 David said to the Philistine, "You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the LORD Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. 46 This day the LORD will hand you over to me, and I'll strike you down and cut off your head. Today I will give the carcasses of the Philistine army to the birds of the air and the beasts of the earth, and the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel. 47 All those gathered here will know that it is not by sword or spear that the LORD saves; for the battle is the LORD's, and he will give all of you into our hands."

In verses 1-3 Samuel told Saul that God wanted to punish the Amakelites for what they did to Israel when they attacked the Israelites when they came from Egypt. Saul was to totally destroy everything that belonged to them. Every living thing was to be killed. Saul and his army attacked the Amakelites and destroyed all the people EXCEPT for King Agag. in verse 9, Saul spared Agag and the BEST of the sheep and cattle. They were unwilling to destroy things that were good or of benefit to them but everything that was despised and weak they totally destroyed. God was grieved and told Samuel that He regretted having made Saul King because he did not follow out His instructions. Samuel was troubled and he cried to God all that night. Samuel was a man of prayer, he must have interceded for Saul. The next day, Saul saw Samuel and LIED and said that he had followed God's instructions. Samuel confronted Saul and said, 'What then is the bleating in my ears? What is the lowing of cattle that I hear?' Saul made up this excuse that the soldiers spared the best of the sheep and the cattle to sacrifice to the Lord. Samuel rebuked him that he, Saul was once small in his own eyes and now he is king of Israel. God gave him specific instructions to completely destroy all the wicked Amakelites. But he did not follow instructions. Saul denied that, he claimed that he followed God's instructions. Saul replied with this: 22 "Does the LORD delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obeying the voice of the LORD? To obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams. 23 For rebellion is like the sin of divination, and arrogance like the evil of idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of the LORD , he has rejected you as king."
In verse 27, as Samuel turned to leave, Saul caught hold of the hem of his garment and it tore. Saul turned to him and said 28 "The LORD has torn the kingdom of Israel from you today and has given it to one of your neighbors-to one better than you. 29 He who is the Glory of Israel does not lie or change his mind; for he is not a man, that he should change his mind."

Samuel put Agag to death. Samuel mourned for Saul and the Lord was grieved. What a tragedy for Saul. He had such a good start in the race of life but then he failed and his life ended as we see later in a downward spiral. How do you run the race of the Christian life? We have to keep on saying TRUST and OBEY!

In 1 Samuel 14.1-13. Jonathan took the initiative to attack the Philistines without his father, Saul, knowing. Jonathan went out in faith and attacked the Philistines. Jonathan said "Perhaps the Lord will act on our behalf. Nothing can hinder the Lord from saving, whether by many or by few." His armor-bearer supported Jonathan wholeheartedly and both went in faith and did a surprise attack on the Philistines.

In 1 Samuel 14.14-23, God honored the first attack by Jonathan and his armor-bearer. A panic struck the whole Philistine army. This panic was created by God. The Philistines were killing each other! The Lord rescued Israel that day!

In 1 Samuel 14.24-45, Saul bound the Israelites under an oath, 'Cursed be any man who eats food before evening comes before I have avenged myself on my enemies!' None of the Israelies ate anything that day. The troops had entered the woods and there was honey oozing out. No one dared to eat any. Jonathan did not hear his father made the oath and ate some honey. Someone told him about the oath and Jonathan said that cause trouble for Israel, and if they had eaten they would have felt better and have defeated the Philistines even more. Later in verse 39 when Saul had asked God if they should attack the Philsitines. God did not answer him. This indicated that there was a sin in the camp. The rash oath that Saul gave was broken by Jonathan. Saul realized that he had to kill Jonathan but the troops intervened on Jonathan's behalf and his life was spared. When we are under stress, we should not make rash promises or oaths to God, it can create bad consequences as we see in 1 Samuel 14. We should follow Jesus' advice on making oaths (Matthew 5.33-37). Jesus said that we are not to swear at all!

SAMUEL REBUKE SAUL 1Sam 13.2-15
Saul had three thousand men while the Philistine had three thousand charioteers and six thousand soldiers. This meant Saul was outnumbered by a ratio of three to one. It was understanable that the morale of Saul's men plumetted when they realized that they were outnumbered. Some hid in cabes and thickets while some deserted the army and went to the land of Gad and Gilead. Saul was told to waited for 7 days. After 7 days, still no Samuel. Saul decided to offer a burnt offering! He took the situation in his own hands. Instead of depending on Samuel, God's man, he decided to depend on himself. When Samuel arrived and saw Saul and asked what he was doing, Saul said when he saw the men scattering and that he did not come and the Philistines were assemb.ling at Micmash, he thought that he ought to sought the Lord's favor by offer the burnt offering. Saul rebuked him and told him because of his action he would not establish his kindom forever but will give it to another person (which we know that David would have the kingdom) because the Lord has sought a man after his own heart and appointed him leader of the people. What would you have done if you were Saul? Do we have the patience to wait on the Lord to get things done even when things look rather desperate.

When Samuel had visited Saul Saul only had six hundred men left. The Philistines had a strategy by which they ensure that there was no blacksmiths left in Israel. Israel even had to go to the Philsitines to have their plowshares, mattocks, axes and sickles sharpened! The strategy had work so that only Saul and Jonathan were the only ones who had a sword or spear in his hand.

Application
Samuel rebuked Saul for being disobedient to the Lord. His kingdom was taken away from him.

Verses to meditate upon: 13 "You acted foolishly," Samuel said. "You have not kept the command the LORD your God gave you; if you had, he would have established your kingdom over Israel for all time. 14 But now your kingdom will not endure; the LORD has sought out a man after his own heart and appointed him leader of his people, because you have not kept the LORD's command."

In verse 3.1-18 God calls Samuel. Samuel was given to the Lord to minister in the Temple. Eli's eyes were becoming so weak, and he was lying in his usual place, Samuel was lying down in the Temple of the Lord where the ark was. The Lord called Samuel. Samuel ran to Eli and said 'Here I am.' Eli said that he did not call to go back and lay down. God called again and Samuel ran to Eli and said 'Here I am, you called me.' Eli said that he did not call to go back and lay down. Samuel did not know the Lord yet. A third time, the Lord called Samuel. Samuel came to to Eli and said 'Here I am.' Eli realized that the Lord was calling, so he said to Samuel, when you hear Him calling, say 'Speak Lord, for your servant is listening.'
The Lord called again and Samuel said 'Speak Lord, for your servant is listening.' The Lord told him that He was about to something in Israel that will make the ears of everyone who hears of it tingle... God was going to punish the house of Eli because of the contemptible things that Eli's sons have done. The guilt of Eli's house will never be atoned for by sacrifice and offerings. This is very serious matter to God.
Samuel went back and lay down, he was afraid to tell Eli of the vision he saw. Eli called him and persuaded him to tell him about the vision. So Samuel told him. Eli's reply was 'He is the Lord, let him do what is good in his eyes.' What an answer! Eli although he had his faults, knew God and His holiness.
In verse 3.19-21 Samuel is known as a prophet. The verse in 19 The Lord was with Samuel as he grew up and he let none of his words fall to the ground. God was with Samuel. We should note that even in spiritual darkness, God will find
someone to show forth his light. He replaced an old priest with a young boy!!

Israel is now moving from a reign of of Theocracy to where God is king to Monarchy where a man is king. Samuel was the last judge of Israel. Hannah was a woman who experience barrenness like some opf the other women in the Bible such as Sarah, Samson's mother and Elizabeth, the mother of John the Baptist. Elkanah, her husband gave her double portions of meat because he loved her and the Lord had closed up her womb (v. 5). Penninah the other wife would taunt her because she could not have any children. One day Hannah went to the Temple, in her tears, she made a vow to God, if God gave her a son, she would give him to serve the Lord and no razor would touch his head. Eli thought that she was drunk but she told Eli about the vow she made. Eli said may God answer your prayer. The Lord remembered her and Samuel was conceived.

Application:
Hannah made a vow to God and she kept her promise. God honored her by giving her more children. She was willing to accept a child from God and yet she was willing to give hum up. We need to realize that if we want to keep something we have to give it up. This is how God works in the law of paradoxes. If we want to gain our lives then we have to lose it.

Verse to meditate on:
11 And she made a vow, saying, "O LORD Almighty, if you will only look upon
your servant's misery and remember me, and not forget your servant but give her a son, then I will give him to the LORD for all the days of his life, and no razor will ever be used on his head."

Ruth 1 There was a famine in the land and Naomi and Elimelech moved to Moab with their two sons. The sons married Moabite women, Orpah and Ruth. Elimelech died, and the sons died some ten years later. Naomi lost her family except for her daughters-in-law, Orpah and Ruth. In verse 6-14, Naomi heard that there was food in Judah, so she decided to go back. She bade farewell to Orpah and Ruth. Ruth expresses a bond with Naomi and her God which is the key verse of the Book. '...your people will be my people and your God, my God.' Ruth could have stayed in Moab with Oprah but she was willing to go in faith and go with Naomi. What about us? Are we willing to step out in faith and identify ourselves with God and His people through good times and bad times? The two women returned to Bethlehem (v. 19-22).Bethlehem

In Ruth 2, Naomi had a relative on her husband's side, whose name was Boaz. We have to remember that Ruth was a Moabitess. The Moabites were enemies of Israel. Harvesting barley was done when Ruth and Naomi showed up. Gleaning was allowed under the law (Leviticus 19.9; 23.22). This was where the corners of the field were not be reaped and any sheaves that were accidentally left behind was not gathered. They were left for the poor to pick up for food. Boaz was kind to Ruth and gave her as much grain as she needed. Boaz had heard about the bond Ruth made with Naomi and God. Ruth told Naomi about Boaz.

Today's reading from Judges 20-21

Judges 20
The Levite told the Israelites what happened and they decided to punish the inhabitants of Gibeah. Civil war was decalared. Eventually the Israelites won after being defeated twice from the Benjaminites. The details are in the chapter. The Benjamites did not repent of their sins to God or tried to reconcile themselves with their fello Israelites. Consequently, they lost twenty-five thousand swordsmen on that day.

Judges 21
The Israelites realized that the tribe of Benjamin was about to be extinct not only because of the many Benjaminites lost during the civil war but also the rash vow that they made 'Not one of us will give his daughter in marriage to a Benjaminite.' The leaders of Israel became peacemaker and the tribes worked together on solving this problem to avoid Benjamin from becoming extinct. Israel had vowed not to give Benjamin wives, but they dis not object if the men from Benjamin went out and took wives 21.16-14).

Finally, to summarize what was happening n Israel, 'In those days Israel had no king, everyone did as he saw fit.'

What do we learn from the today's reading Again, sin is like yeast, a little of it makes the dough rises. The easy way to solve things may be the hardest way. The Benjaminites could have repented and tried to solve the conflict before it happened. Did you know that King Saul and the Apostle Paul came from the tribe of Benjamin. God had to ensure that the tribe of Benjamin would be around despite the mess that the Benjaminites got themselves into. It is wasier for us to do things man's way instead of God's way, when we do that we pay a heavy price.

Judges 17
The action of one family can influence a nation for good or bad. We have seen this with the Billy Graham's family. The action of that one family has brought glory to God's name and has brought many into God's Kingdom and has influenced the nation for good. There are may examples of bad families that has influenced the United States. But today, we are looking at the family of Micah. This family was devoted to idolatry. The man, Micah created idols, his mother encouraged him to make idols and out of her mouth came blessings and curse (James 3.9-10). She care more about money than her son! Micah had hired a Levite. This Levite should know better because all Levites were consecrated to God and he knew the Law. He was only wanted money, he definitely was not a servant of God.

Judges 18
The Levite compromised himself further by going to the Danites because they offered him more money. From this corruption in the one family spread to a clan then to a tribe and this affected the whole tribe of Dan. The Danites had sent our spies and discovered this Levite, hired him as their seer, and took his idols with them. Micah and his neighbors overtook the Danites, tried to recapture the Levite and the idols but failed. To make matters worse, the Danites attacked Laish In the process, where innocent people died, and burned down their city. They renamed the city Dan and made the city a center of worship for their idols. The irony was that they were living in 'a place that lacks nothing whatever' yet there was one thing they lacked and it was God's blessing on their lives.

What do we learn from the life of Micah. Sin is like yeast, a little of it makes the dough rises. The Levite, of all the people should know better. Sometimes we compromise ourselves instead of standing up for what is right. The Levite sold himself for money just as Judas Iscariot sold his soul for thirty pieces of silver.

Judges 15
Samson wanted to be with his Philistine wife when her father refused to let him see her. Samson got angry, caught three hundred foxes and tied them tail to tail in pairs, fastened a toch to every pair of tails and let them run through the grains, vineyards and olive groves. The Philistines retaliated by killing Samson's wife and her father. Samson retaliated by killing a thousand men with the jawbone of a donkey.

Judges 16
Samson slept with a prostitute, fell in love with Delilah. The Philistine leaders wanted to find out the secret behind Samson's strength, and offered Delilah money to find out the strength of Samson. After several false answers that Samson gave Delilah about the secret of his strength, he finally gave in and told her the secret of his strength which was the shaving of his hair with a razor. she betrayed him, they gouged out his eyes. Samson died by pulling down the pillars of the temple and killing many more when he died than when he was alive.

What do we learn from the life of Samson. God uses even the sinfulness of man to accomplish his purpose to bring glory to His name. The Holy Spirit was involved in the the life of Samson when he had exhibited these great strength in killing the Philistines. Samson was a slave to his lust, he chose the wrong women in his life and that was his downfall. Despite all of Samson's weaknesses and faults he was listed among the heroes of the faith (Hebrews 11.32). The important lesson to learn is God can use sinners who are willing to be used by Him.

Just because a tribe receive an allotment of land did NOT mean that the land could be occupied immediately. In Joshua's lifetime some of the land were conquered during his lifetime. But after his lifetime other lands were conquered. This is seen as Additional Conquests

While Joshua was a book of victory, Judges was a book of defeat. the people could not possess the remaining cities, and villages in some cases. Note that despite the conquest there were also failures to reach victory. a list is given below.

Apostasy and the Judges
In Judges 2.8-3.6. There is this cycle that the people go through. first they sin, God punishes them by allowing oppression by the inhabitant of the land. The people repent of their sins and then God raise up a judge to rescue the. Then the vicious cycle repeats itself. This is very similar in the Christian life. We sin, God allows us affliction in our life, we repent, God delivers us.

Today's Reading: Deuteronomy 24

Deuteronomy 24 deals with various laws dealing with marriage (v.1 -5) involving divorce and a newly-wed husband stay at home with his wife for one year before going off to war. There are other laws related to masters and servants (6-18) and the rich and poor (19-22). Again the theme of loving your neigbor as yourself continues.
